Short Post

It is discovered that Amelie is larger than (some) watermelons:

One more pic (where it looks like she's holding the camera out with one hand to take the photo of herself):

Smiley Baby

Apparently Amelie was sleepy, since she was completely out approximately 6 mintues after Sam shot this video.

Before he got out the camera, she was laughing big, but this still shows some good smiles and loud noises and enthusiastic hand-chewing.

In other news and notes, Amelie had an always-exciting trip to the grocery store today and got her nails trimmed while awake. The thing is, it's much harder to work with a moving target, but it's much easier to get her to sleep if she's swaddled.

P.S. Do you like the way I reassure Sam that I'll edit the video? And then I don't? Who could cut that down, I'd like to know.

Amelie's Day

I decided to keep track of all of Amelie's activities again -- maybe I'll do this once every month or so. Here is a play-by-play of everything that Amelie did for a day (about a 24 hour period starting last night -- I know that's a little strange, but hey, it's what worked out).

If you'll note, there are some changes from last time, but some things are still the same.

Amelie’s Day Starting 8/11/2010
8:45pm ~ Asleep when mom gets home from work, and sleeping peacefully in her bouncy chair on the dining room table as mom and dad eat supper.
9:15 ~ Wakes up ready to eat!
9:35 ~ Gets a new diaper and is swaddled up for bedtime.
9:45 ~ After being patted on the back, grudgingly accepts being laid to bed in the bassinet.
9:55 ~ Stares in fascination at dad’s bedside lamp, gets a pacifier, goes to bed for real.
10:00 ~ Sleeping sweetly.
3:00am ~ Wakes, nurses, right back to bed.
6:00 ~ Waking-up noises, re-inserts pacifier, will have none of it.
6:02 ~ Breakfast!
6:30 ~ Back asleep.
7:30 ~ New diaper, new outfit, ready for the day.
7:40 ~ Calm, talking and smiling at dad on the couch, walking around looking at things, begins to get fussy.
7:50 ~ Thinks maybe she wants to swing in the swing … but no.
8:00 ~ Second breakfast
8:13 ~ Hanging out in the bouncy chair, awake, smiling.
8:40 ~ Watches Teen Wolf 2 with dad.
9:40 ~ Nurses (Third breakfast? Pre-lunch?)
10:00 ~ A little fussy, walking around.
10:10 ~ Sleeping in the bouncy chair.
10:45 ~ Wakes up happy, new diaper.
11:00 ~ Being cute.
11:15 ~ Boppy tummy time – nearly 15 whole minutes with just minimal protest, a new record.
11:30 ~ Fussy time.
11:40 ~ Nurses.
11:45 ~ Sleeping in the bouncy seat listening to the apparently soothing hum of the bathroom fan.
11:50 ~ Thinks "Oh, no! Where’d the pacifier go! Okay, okay, there it is … I’m okay." Back asleep.
12:55 ~ Making funny noises, but apparently still asleep.
3:30 ~ Awake and confused, nurses, all better, loses socks at some point.
3:50 ~ New diaper, hanging out on the changing pad, lotioned up, spits up.
3:55 ~ Transferred to crib, stares at mobile.
4:15 ~ Good mood, new socks.
4:30 ~ Trip to the grocery store, how exciting.
5:30 ~ Returns home, nurses.
5:35 ~ Sits on the counter and watches mom and dad make dinner. It is discovered that Amelie is approximately the size of the coffee pot:

Thinks, "Dinner would be cooked faster if you'd stop taking pictures of me."

6:00 ~ Fussy baby.
6:10 ~ Nurses again, is swaddled.
6:30 ~ Sits in her bouncy chair on the dining room table while mom and dad eat dinner.
6:45 ~ Reluctantly falls asleep.
7:05 ~ Threatens to wake up.
7:10 ~ Wakes up, new diaper, nurses.
8:00 ~ Spits up on dad, wardrobe change.
8:15 ~ Swinging.
8:18 ~ Hanging out on the couch.
8:30 ~ New diaper, spit up.
8:35 ~ Swaddled and put to bed in crib. Thinks, “Hahahahahahaha, yeah right.”
8:40 ~ Rejoins mom and dad in the living room, tired in bouncy chair.
8:50 ~ Starting to nod off with dad's help.
9:00 ~ Asleep.

Grand Totals

Big Trip, Finale

We got back from our big trip on Sunday, but it's taken me a little bit to get these last few pictures uploaded, probably in part because I started back to work on Monday. Besides being a little busy, things have been going swimmingly, and Sam and Amelie have been having fun.

Here are those last bootheel photos:

Grandpa Leroy and his buddy:

Sam thought we should try for a shot of her frowning, but I think this one is a little more appropriate.

Can you believe she wore this dress all day?

Big Trip III

Great-grandpa Bob was a big hit. Grandma Pat was, too, but for some reason we didn't get a photo! :(

Cousin Darri finally got to see an awake baby.

Cameron couldn't resisit a little floor time.

And Aunt Lana, of course, was all smiles.

Big Trip II

One leg of our big trip took us to Paducah, Kentucky to meet the Kohlers, Amelie's great-grandparents. Unfortunately, we forgot the bouncy chair, but Amelie did okay just hanging out in her carseat while the big folks were eating.

Great-grandpa couldn't wait to hold her.

Great-grandma is very entertaining.

She slept for almost the whole way back to Bernie, and then had tummy time with Nana Jana.

Big Trip I

Amelie is lucky enough to have seven living great-grandparents, and we made the trip from Columbia down to the bootheel to get to see five of them this week. Here are the first few pictures from the trip.

She was a little shy (fussy) yesterday, but today Amelie and Great-grandma Doris had fun talking and playing.

Nana Jana couldn't wait to get home from work to see the grandbaby.

And look what Amelie can do!

Posing for the Camera

There are more pictures and updates from our big trip soon to come, but we just got to the Bootheel yesterday afternoon and haven't had a photo op with the great-grandparents just yet.

This is what she looked like when she woke up, I swear:

Mohawk baby.

Waking Up

Every once in a while, Amelie will fall mostly back asleep on the way to the changing table in the morning. Then she gets to wake up again and streeeeeeeeeeetch.

Two Months (and one day) Old

Amelie had her two-month well baby visit to the doctor this morning.

Length: 21.5 inches (between the 5th and 10th percentiles ... Sam thinks the nurse could have stretched her out to 22 inches, but that's still kind of a short baby.)
Weight: 10 pounds, 9 ounces (between the 25th and 50th percentiles)
Head Circumference: 39 centimeters (between the 25th and 50th percentiles)
Wardrobe Changes: 2

The hard part was that she also got three shots. She showed off her temper by turning beet red and screaming, but calmed down pretty quickly. The whole ordeal was probably harder on me than it was on her, but I only cried a little bit. Thankfully, Sam's hearing was short and he could come.

She looks kind of concerned about her bandaids.

Getting better. . .

Who could be cranky with a stuffed buffalo?

Play Gym

As I think I've mentioned before, Amelie is not the biggest fan of tummy time. Pretty frequently tummy time turns into "Flip me back over, woman, so I can look at my play gym!" Here are some baby play gym pictures.

Here's a video of the play gym in action. They must call it a "gym" because of all the exercise she's getting. Look at those legs go! (Side note: This video is 5 mintues long. I thought for a minute that I should try to edit it down a little bit, since a baby laying on the floor for 5 minutes is not the most captivating video in You Tube history, but I quickly dismissed all such thoughts from my mind.)

And I couldn't resisit one last swaddled and sleeping picture:

Baby Burrito

Amelie tends to sleep better when she's swaddled. In fact, she's sleeping right at this very minute. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed!) Here's a picture:

The conundrum with wrapping her up like a baby burrito, however, lies in the fact that she's also very crafty, and very active, and very prone to wiggle her way out.

This is what I found when I woke up a few days ago.

Not what you would call the world's most perfect swaddle.

Amelie's Day

So, this is a little late. (Did I mention Holly had the computer?)

According to Your Baby's Development, "Your newborn may be alert two to three hours per day ..."

Well, not our newborn. A few weeks ago, I kept track of everything Amelie did in about a 24 hour period.

Amelie’s Day Wed 6/30/10
10:15pm - Sleeping peacefully in bassinet. Isn’t she a good baby to let her parents sleep?
3:50am - Of course she’s awake! It’s almost 4!
3:55 – Gets a new diaper, takes medicine, nurses in bed.
4:20 – Worn out from all that activity, sleeping in bassinet.
5:55 – You mean it’s not quite time to start a new day? New diaper, nurses in bed.
6:15 – Fitful sleeping with pacifier in bassinet.
7:45 – Awake!
7:50 - Has second breakfast, is patted on the back, gets a new diaper, is carried around, rocks in the rocker, nurses in the rocker, put in the swing asleep.
9:45 - Sleeps in swing.
11:20 – Oh, it’s so hard to be a baby. Wakes up crying, spits up, new diaper, takes medicine.
11:30 – Fussy.
11:40 – Nurses in rocking chair.
11:50 – Alert, is carried around.
12:05 – Eats lazily to sleep.
12:25 – Sleeps on Mom in the rocker.
12:35 – Sleeps in the bouncy chair in the dining room.
1:15 – Awake and quietly suspicious in the bouncy chair.
1:25 – Falls asleep in the bouncy chair while I take a shower. Oh, the soothing sounds of water running.
2:40 – Wakes crying, thinks, “Hey! Where did you go? What happened to that noise of water running? Why would you leave me in here alone?” Gets a new diaper, fussy.
2:45 - Eating. Sometimes she’s a slowpoke.
3:15 – Really, one of her favorite things is a new diaper and playing on changing table.
3:30 – A little fussy, spit up, new outfit!
3:40 – Played on floor. Did I mention that she can roll over?
3:50 – Thinks, “Hey! I didn’t mean to roll over! What happened?” Cries and spits up.
4pm - Takes medicine, puts on another new outfit and a new diaper, is happy.
4:05 - Really really fussy time, is swaddled, pacifier, walking around.
4:15 - Walking around the house, looking at things, calm.
4:30 - Sleeping on Sam. She likes to sleep on us, so that even when she is napping we can’t get anything done.
5:05 – Almost wakes up, but is successfully transferred to the bouncy chair.
5:05 - Sleeping in bouncy chair. Man, oh man, she loves her bouncy chair.
5:15 – Awake, happy, nurses, new diaper.
5:40 — Eating again.
5:55 - Awake, happy.
6:30 - Eating, dozed off for 3 min, new diaper.
7:15 – Fussy baby time.
7:25 - Slept on walk in stroller.
7:50 – Nursed.
7:55 - Calm, then fussy, then new diaper.
8:05 - Happy on changing table.
8:30 - Bath time! Dad is a great bath-giver :)
8:45 – Fussy again. Thinks, "Just put me back in the bath! Why did I have to get out of the bath?"
9:05 - Dad gives me a bottle.
9:40 - 10:15 - Happy, hanging out on changing pad, new diaper.

Grand Totals:
Awake: 10 hours, 45 minutes
Crying: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Diapers: 10
Eats: 12 times
Wardrobe changes: 3

Frowns and Smiles

Disclaimer: Some of you might be wondering about the recent lack of baby buffaloe blog updates. Well, as you might have guessed, Holly hijacked the computer. Additionally, Sam is responsible for the content and photography of this entry :)

I couldn't help myself from taking these pictures of Amelie crying. I promise that Crystal was trying to calm her down while I was taking these.

I also took some pictures of Amelie's first smiles. Obviously this is a baby with intense emotions.

Tummy Time

Today, Amelie rolled over from her front to her back! I think it was mostly just a happy accident, but still, she's quite advanced ;)

Tummy time is not her favorite time of day, so I thought I'd make it a little more appealing to her by combining it with naked time, and here's a video. Look at her try to crawl away. (She scooted from the middle of the blanket to the edge by the end.)

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. We didn't do anything too terribly exciting, but Sam did fix us some French toast for breakfast (that's a little bit backwards, but I'll take it ;)

The next two big pieces of news don't have photographic documentation, but Amelie keeps growing and changing all the time. She's now sucking on her hand to comfort herself sometimes and also cooing when she's happy.

Aunt Holly's been over this week, helping out and changing lots of diapers.

Here's a short video of Amelie on her play mat (sorry that the video quality is not great). I was hoping to get her really cooing, but maybe I'll catch it next time.

And finally, for Father's day, one more of Grandpa Buffaloe holding the baby.

Bath Time

Amelie is three weeks old today, and she had her first bath last night (we didn't do this sooner because she had a remarkably tenacious umbilical cord). Despite the photographic evidence, she really didn’t seem to mind the bath all that much.

All clean!

Hiccups!

Here's a video from yesterday. Amelie had the hiccups quite a bit in utero, as well.

2 Weeks!

Today, Amelie is two weeks old and she had a check-up at the doctor's office today. We found out that she now weighs 7 pounds 8 ounces (which is 5 ounces more than on Tuesday and 3 ounces more than she weighed when she was born).

She really likes to play on her changing table and look out the window:

Sam went to work on Tuesday, hence the shirt and tie.

Oh, and here's a picture where her hair looks red :)
