Soccer!

Leah did soccer again! She's graduated from the little kids team (where it was co-ed, 4 on 4, and no goalie) to a U8 girls team that plays 7 on 7 with a goalie. They won a game! (Maybe two 😂)

At the first practice with the new team, Leah introduced herself as “Little Cheetah,” and voila! Everyone called her little cheetah for the rest of the games.

She was sick and unfortunately missed the last game of the season. Sam took these photos!

Middle School Band Night

 Amelie & the rest of the middle schoolers got to play with the High School Band at Hickman for middle school night. They were out so late!

Sam sent me a video. You can see her smack dab in the middle of the frame.

Grace Potter Concert

I was wondering why I didn't make a blog post about this & when I sat down to finally do it, I realized it was because I didn't take any good pictures. But here you go anyway!

Continuing our recent streak of winning tickets (& also Sam's rich history / unbelievable good luck), I won tickets to see Grace Potter for BXR's birthday bash this year. We went ahead & bought 2 more tickets so all four of us could go. Sam & James stood up front & Amelie & I thought it was too noisy and went and sat in the back. 

James did not want to cooperate with the photo, though he had a good time. It was a little chilly, definitely fall, but not bad at all. We didn't think you could bring chairs to Rose (it was against the rules the last time we were there - not too long ago!) but turns out you can.

School Picture Day

Why are school pictures so expensive?? $60 by the time all 3 kids got a digital download so I'm not breaking the law by posting them here. I almost didn't do it & just got the cheapest package (which would have been $8 each, $24 total) but I really do want to have them (they show their personalities so well even if it does crack me up how obviously little time the photographer spends on each one) & I'd rather keep them all collected in the same place in the event I want to go back and do some kind of compilation. 

Leah is in the 1st grade - 6 years old with Ms. Blades

James is in the 5th grade - 11 years old with Mr. Gray

And Amelie is in the 8th grade - 13 years old - last year of Middle School at JMS

All of these look SO REMARKABLY EERILY SIMILAR to last year!

I said to Sam (after he said "I thought you weren't going to buy them") watch the school district change companies next year.

Concert with Leah

Yesterday afternoon, an email went out from HR saying the library had 2 tickets to see the Liverpool Legends (the Beatles cover band) saying they’d raffle them off at 4:30 - so on a whim I put my name in the hat and I won! 

In retrospect, this was maybe dumb because James who would have really liked it was on a school trip, and then I'd forgotten Amelie had other plans (which meant she couldn't go & also that she couldn't watch Leah so Sam & I could go), so I took Leah! I did feel the need to tell everyone we knew that we ran into (and there were several folks) that I'd won the (really great seats) tickets so they didn't think I spent $70 so Leah could go to the show! We got there early-ish & parked in a parking garage downtown and walked to the Missouri Theatre. And here are some low-light photos I took:

It was super fun! We did spend some time out in the hallway, where we could still hear just fine & Leah talked me into Reece's Cups from the concession stand. There were costume changes, & bubbles for "Yellow Submarine" & Leah sung along & did the twist. We left a little early!

Haircut

Leah’s hair got so long! It’s even longer than this, actually, since the braid shrinks it up some:

She is not a fan of having her hair washed, or detangled, or fixed at all, however. So I cut it. She moved around quite a bit during the haircut even though I was working so fast! and then the curls make it hard to see if it is even, too (so it’s probably not). She’s still never had a professional haircut. I wonder what a hairdresser would say!

Petting Zoo

After a friend's birthday party (they are all wearing green for the Ninja Turtles theme), the kids walked to downtown Boonville and checked out the Heritage Fest petting zoo. I was at work! & I don't know what all these animals are - besides cute!

James is 11

James is 11! 

He had a birthday sleepover party with 4 boys - I picked them up from school on a Friday & they hung out & went bowling & ate pizza & opened presents & jumped on the trampoline & made ice cream sundaes & banished parents/siblings upstairs & played at the park across the street & spent the night & watched movies & listened to music. They got more sleep than I thought they might (from about midnight to 7 or 7:30am) though one boy insisted on sleeping on a chair even after I brought down another mattress for him - my 40 year old back would not have forgiven me for months or years or maybe ever after that. Another boy blew his nose and at first accidentally tried to dispose of the tissue in our silverware drawer - so I washed all of the silverware & cleaned out the drawer, which I'm sure is good practice to do periodically regardless, and I am absolutely glad that I happened to be standing in the kitchen and saw the mix-up. Ha! James got a strike at the bowling alley (wow!), but 2 hours was maybe too long for them to play. Leah had an impromptu sleepover with Aunt Holly because she was inconsolable about being left out of shenanigans. 

Leah had to ride the bus home (with Amelie) since this is the max number of non-front-seat passengers in the minivan (James is pretty salty about not being allowed in the front until his NEXT birthday). (I think they are trying to look cool in the photo. They ran around & around the playground before this.)

The pizza took longer than I thought it would to deliver, which led children to consume a lot more of the veggie and fruit trays than they might have otherwise. Ben loaded his plate up with vegetables & left a pizza-sized triangle blank spot for eventual pizza. 

James wanted to be in charge of picking all the meals on the Saturday after his birthday & so spread out the celebrating a little bit. He wanted a breakfast quesadilla from taco bell for breakfast, Chinese food for lunch, and an assortment of appetizers for supper (Sam made onion rings from scratch! plus chicken wings and bacon-wrapped dates and watermelon  and mini corndogs - those were not homemade! ). He asked for a chocolate "emo Elmo" cake, and Leah kept calling it some variation of "emu Elmo / emo emu / Elmo emu emo" He did a fair amount of the drawing/decorating/designing.  He also insisted that the "11" number candles did not count toward the 11 candles for his 11 years, which also needed to be on the cake (of course). 

He also wanted his hair dyed blue. It started out as really blue, but then turned more greenish (I guess because his hair is yellow), which thankfully he was okay with. I wonder what color it will be in 2 weeks when they do school photos. 

For presents he got: the black-and-white original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic collection, the TMNT video game (from Grandma Mary & Papaw), a sketchbook, Louisiana's Song, In Real Life, Monopoly, the expanded Exploding Kittens card game, a fidget spinner, and (per his request) "awesome bath bombs." 

Nana Jana picked him up after school one day & took him to the mall & he came back with a new book series & even more exploding kittens. 

Go Karts

James had a friend stay the night (this is belated! from back over the summer!) & they wanted to ride Go Karts out at Midway. It sprinkled some & they had to let the track dry out for 20 minutes, so we had very expensive ice creams & played a round of mini-golf while we waited (I totally kicked their 10 year old butts at putt putt)

When we walked up, we were the only ones there for the go-karts (the rest of the crowd had cleared out due to the rain and the wait) and the teenaged workers were racing each other. They asked if they could keep racing with the boys & they said yes - though it turned out not to be much of a contest! The ten year olds were quite cautious! 

I only did one lap - Leah got a little scared!

1st day of school

The kids had their first day of school! Awhile ago! I posted it on Facebook (or Sam did) and I guess I forgot to put them here. 

 Leah is in first grade with her same teacher from last year - who is wonderful! in Unit A. 

James is in fifth grade - his last year in elementary school - with his same wonderful teacher as well in Unit C. He has been experimenting with styling his hair, though he keeps calling the product "mouse." This particular look is mostly water, so it didn't look quite so slick once that evaporated. 

And Amelie is in eighth grade - her last year at middle school, so she and James won't overlap at all. 

On my morning walk while they were gone, I said to my neighbor who has a boatload of kids “happy first day of school!” and he responded “Surely you don’t mean that!”

Spark (the dog) had a terrible first day with everyone out of the house starting right from when we all left first thing for pictures in the front yard. Amelie came back talkative, about a couple of bad kids in her English class among other things. The other two didn’t voluntarily offer up any details, but apparently James made a friend on the bus & thus didn’t complain about the excessive heat or new/lost driver when they finally got off at the stop 45 minutes late - I walked down there to wave the bus down - & Leah didn’t remember the names of the kids who sat at her table - there must have been a lot going on!

They were not quite as up-and-at-em the second day but still pretty positive. Toasty pains au chocolat for breakfast helped I’m sure.

James Birthday Interview

James turned 11! He already had his party last weekend, and he wanted to have the family celebration/pick all the meals for tomorrow (I guess school interferes too much with that.) He took mini Hersey cookies & cream candy bars as a class treat & then said that "like 6 other kids" also had their birthday today so I guess they got lots of treats in Unit C. He agreed to let me do the birthday interview after school. And, let it be known, it was a birthday miracle but the bus came on time & stopped at the right stop.

Big Trip!

Much like the blog itself, I stole an idea for a new family tradition wholesale  from my friend Amanda. We decided that when a Buffaloe kid turns 13, they can plan a vacation to take solo with a parent. James was ALL OVER this idea immediately, and has many plans laid out already. Amelie took a little more prodding to make decisions, but decided eventually on something with science & a beach & then narrowed it down to a trip to Texas. We visited Houston (NASA) & then South Padre Island. 

We got to fly out of Columbia's regional airport - super convenient! I was convinced we'd see Uncle Joe & Aunt Jenn at the airport but somehow we missed them. It was Amelie's 1st flight. I was trying to get her and the clouds out the window at the same time - I interrupted her reading her book! The takeoff was a little bumpy, but it smoothed out & she liked it. 

We had Dickey's in the airport - only it was 3x as expensive as the Dickey's here. I got to translate (Spanish) a bit for the woman in line behind me. 

It was quite a long layover! It would have been faster to drive to Houston from Dallas. We walked all around the terminal. There was a vending machine selling salads (we didn't buy one). 

I didn't even think they gave printed boarding passes anymore: 

I wanted to take a picture of the gamer lounge in the airport for James. We didn't stop in but he would have appreciated it. 

2nd flight of the day - from Dallas to Houston. 

She was impressed with the sodas mid-flight (when I asked if she wanted one, she said, "Is that a thing?") & also the flight attendant gave her an extra snack. 

We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel - the driver got lost. We stayed in a super nice hotel right on the boardwalk. 

The second day was mostly devoted to NASA. I got up early and walked the boardwalk & went swimming on the rooftop pool & let Amelie sleep in - she did those things later with me. 

At NASA, there were lots of the training modules on display & some of the actual spaceships. 

All of the displays were super interesting! Here's the Lunar Rover - it only weighs 77 pounds on the moon.

We also took a tram tour of the Johnson Space Center - I didn't take any pictures, though - it took about an hour. We passed by huge storage containers of liquid nitrogen right off the road & also longhorn cattle - I don't remember what kind of project they were involved in, though. I'd never seen one  in person before and they are almost comically ridiculous looking.

We went inside one building and walked around a walkway near the ceiling and got to look down on real live scientists at work - I was impressed with how messy everyone's desk was. 

There was a velcro chessboard that was played on the ISS & the Hawaiian shirts worn by the next crew that went up after the Challenger disaster - 2 years later. I tried to buy Amelie a NASA shirt but she didn't want one, so we got Steve a calendar for Christmas instead.

There was a cool room full of stars when we first came in, but I didn't take a picture. We also touched a moon rock. We did the trivia game & got all the questions right but one, though some were guesses - we ended up seeing the answers on displays as we went through the rest of it. 

There was a place to go outside and climb up in some retired rockets but it was so hot we skipped it & just looked at them on our way back in the building.

Then that night we went out to eat at a restaurant called Aquarium - it had big huge multi-floor aquariums. Our hotel stay also came with two wristbands for the boardwalk rides - we rode the train around:

We both rode the hypno-spin, but Amelie went a second time after I was done so I could take this picture. Next we rode the Pharaoh (not pictured!) It was pretty scary!

There was live music that night - the band name was Van Full of Nuns. Amelie was running around with some littler kids who had glow-in-the-dark swords. 

The plane from Houston to South Padre was very small! And we boarded outside! We could see the pilot drinking orange soda as we walked past the cockpit on the way in! We got up early & got there the full 2 hours ahead which was in retrospect not necessary - we didn't check any bags. 

Two different taxi drivers wanted to make sure that we would wear lots of sunscreen. We stayed at La Copa Inn in South Padre. 

The first night we went on a fireworks sunset cruise - it said to be 30 minutes early, so we bought expensive lemonade drinks while we waited and looked at the boats.

We saw a blimp & I asked the crew what it was & they said it was a government surveillance drone. They also pointed out Space X and we could see the launch tower & four rockets ready to go. 

There was a pirate ship in the distance! We saw 2 dolphins & the pirate ship also saw the dolphins, so we were both hanging around watching them (the dolphins were fishing, I think - swimming around in a circle/loop).

The crew member came around & asked if we'd like a picture, but he took a terrible photo! He said - oh no, my thumb was over the camera! 

I guess the second try was not a whole lot better. It seemed like a long ride back from the fireworks but it was nice - we got sprayed with water a few times & Amelie's hair ended up so tangled by the wind. 

Amelie was already out of clothes so we did laundry at the hotel & then spread them out all over the room to dry. The hotel breakfast had delicious, delicious breakfast tacos, but I did let Amelie sleep in one day. We visited the Sea Turtle Rescue. 

The woman who started the rescue ran it out of HER HOUSE for 20 years. 

She weighs 140 pounds and her favorite food is lettuce.

Amelie is approximately the same size as a loggerhead sea turtle.

The next day we took the bus back to the mainland to see the lighthouse at Port Isabel

It looks like we're sunburned here - but it was just hot!

We went souvenir shopping and bought things to bring back for Sam & Leah & James. The local library was closed so I couldn't go in & check it out.

I didn't know before we went that one of the attractions on South Padre is all of the sandcastle artists - these are a collection under a tent called "sandcastle village" but there are more! We saw one outside of a bank & an older one outside of the museum.

Amelie made me give them a tip. "I don't have any cash!" I said, and she reminded me that I could Venmo them.

We went to a gigantic candy store - we talked about bringing James home a sucker with a worm or a scorpion in it but decided against it.

Here's the candy loot. We got a couple of each & munched on it for the rest of our stay. 

I was ready to go swim!

We video called Sam for Father's Day & then went out for Sushi. There were several restaurants very close to the hotel that we could walk to.

It was so late! There were several sleeping kids at the restaurant.

The next day was very hot (again!) and the only time I took my phone down to the beach - I'd planned on renting an umbrella and 2 chairs for us ($35!) but the one time I said we could go a little earlier and spring for it, the workers weren't there! 

How to escape a rip current: 

It was an easy walk to the beach: 

Amelie bought a swimsuit coverup when we went souvenir shopping. 

I saw a jellyfish swimming in the ocean (it was small) and Amelie and I saw two dead ones on the beach.

Looking for something indoors (and cool) to do, I thought - oh! we could go to the movies! I was a little surprised there wasn't a regular movie theater anywhere close, but there was a Virtual Reality movie - she and I saw a 12 minute underwater film in the 9-seat theater and then she took an extra spin on the VR chair they had in the lobby (this one was a rollercoaster with knights & dragons).

Real milkshakes from a real milkshake machine - I remember Grandpa Leroy drinking out of the silver cups like this.

We booked a dinner cruise for the last night & it was really special - one of my favorite parts. Amelie waiting:

Our chef prepared a whole meal on this little stand on the back of the boat - one L of the little kitchen was a grill & the other part was a sink. The captain & the first mate were a married couple, I found out to my great delight halfway through the cruise. 

 

Amelie got a Coke. She tried (& liked) the mahi mahi ceviche for an appetizer & I thought the fajitas were a-mazing. There were little cheesecake squares for dessert, which was perfect as I'd stuffed myself on fajitas. There was a group of locals on board & everyone laughed when the captain asked where we were all from & they said Port Isabel.  

It was a beautiful view & we got to go back along a canal & see the big beautiful houses right on the water - most of them had boats & many had swimming pools & one had astroturf & some playground equipment (right next to the water).

There were these two hammock type things on the back of the boat for lounging (you could see the water underneath).

We bought sodas so we could sit & watch the live music at the pier after the dinner cruise.

Here's a roller coaster action shot. There was also a 3-story go kart track and a bungee but we didn't risk any of those - we could hear the people screaming as they fell on the bungee ride, though.

The last day we had to get up early & we got to the airport in plenty of time.

Right  now, James is saying he wants to go to New York & take in the shows & pizza, but he has plenty of time to change his mind, too.
